“The ancient art of maskmaking has been practiced for at least nine thousand years, and has been used around the world in ritual, celebration, theatre and performances. Maskmaking has also been used as a therapeutic tool, helping us share experiences and feelings through symbol, metaphor, and visual imagery”. So says Susan Magsamen and Ivy Ross in their book “Your Brain On Art”, my current read while waiting for the ice to melt.
One week before the April 20th gathering at The Cave Jennifer Corio and Dave Frei will host a potluck/maskmaking/costume building gathering for PNWS members at their studio in Vancouver. Our intent is to build on last year’s International Sculpture Day event and gather in a communal space for fun and collaborative art making.
This gathering is a continuum of our gathering at last year’s ISD’s gathering at Scrap in Portland. Glue and paper will be provided for anyone that wants to do paper mache, and there will be spaces to create wearable sculptures with tape, cardboard, and whatever else anyone wants to bring to share in the creative process. We invite PNWS members to bring materials to share.
Again, this event will culminate in a celebratory walk through downtown the following week, wearing our masks/costumes, and proclaiming to the City of Vancouver, “We Are Sculptors, We Are Here, Hear us roar!”
