Coalescing: A PNW Sculptors-Only Show

Last year a few members worked with Vancouver’s Art At The CAVE Gallery to propose a show of PNW Sculptors’ work. Themes were proposed, batted around and finally voted on by the PNWS Board. (If you’re not yet familiar with Art At The CAVE, visit their website here. Or better yet – go visit in person!)

The proposal was accepted, and the show is scheduled for November. So, it’s time to get ready!

The winning theme? Coalescing: Sculptural Collaborations. In a time when differences often drive a sense of division, this theme challenges us to bring differences together in a way that works.

I’m hoping we can create high-impact art AND bring stories to the artist talk about the challenges of working with differences, not just so we (or our materials) play well side-by-side, but so our collaborations truly coalesce.

Questions to explore:
How can different materials play a role in the same piece? What happens when wildly different materials try to come together – try to coalesce into a successful sculpture?

How might different artists work together on the same piece? For example, some artists are material-informed, finding the work as the material changes shape. Others start with a specific vision and go through options in 2D before even touching their materials. How can artists like this collaborate?

What else does coalescence and collaboration bring to mind? How can you reflect that in your work?

You might also ask:
  • Do I have to collaborate with another artist to take part? No.
  • Coalescence means something completely different to me. Should I apply anyway? Yes.
  • What’s that about an artist talk? Art at the Cave hosts artist talks the 3rd Saturday of each month. We’re looking forward to hearing from PNWS artists about their work for this show.
  • What are the key dates? We don’t have exact dates yet but you can expect an application deadline around October 11, art drop off around October 25. Shows typically open the first day of the month and the artist talk will likely be Nov. 21.
  • I’d like to collaborate with another artist. Can I get help finding another person to work with? Yes! Absolutely. Just add a comment below and we’ll get the match-making started.

Basically, this show is whatever each artist chooses to make it. Best advice: don’t ask for permission. Just forge ahead with whatever this theme prompts for you. If your idea is likely to involve the police or any other truly unusual situation, please have a brief chat with Leslie (president@pnwsculptors.org) to help clear the way for your brilliance.
