President’s Message – March 2025

The block of clay sat there, a dank gray glob in its sealed bag. I am not a ceramicist, I remind myself, so there’s no need for expectations. Just dig in, get my hands dirty and see what happens.

My mission was straightforward: to see if I could build some molds to use for kiln-formed glass pieces. Not that I know much about that either, to be honest, but I’m getting there.

It’s too soon to say how my clay endeavor will work out. It feels like I’m on a long and winding path that keeps unfurling, learning as I go, just trying to stay open to what IS. Sometimes I’m electric with inspiration and energy, bubbling over with enthusiasm. Sometimes I stop entirely, mired in doubt.

The friends I’ve made through PNWS remind me to keep going. That art matters. That MY art matters. Just like YOUR art matters. No one else can make it. No one else brings your perspective, your hands, your mind to the work.

Whether you have encouragement to share with others or just need to be around other people who make things – people who show up and put hands on materials, unsure how it will all turn out – know that you are welcome here.

If you are a current member, I challenge you to come to an event, reach out to a fellow-member whose work you admire, offer to volunteer at one of the upcoming shows – connect in some small way with this amazing community. Even filling out the brief membership survey “counts”!

If you’re new to PNW Sculptors or just curious, you’re welcome as well. You’ll find we are about as un-stuffy as it gets, and as supportive as it gets. Monthly gatherings are full of idea sharing, laughter and respect.

The calendar is great for knowing what’s coming up next. Subscribe for the latest, and be sure to SCROLL DOWN for details on most events.

There is also interest percolating in the events below. If you want to see PNWS participate, speak up! We’re making strides in managing events more efficiently, but each event needs champions and participants as we continually create this magical sculpture that is PNWS.

  • Troutdale Art Festival (June 7, 8 Troutdale OR)
  • Vancouver Art and Music Festival (July 31 – Aug. 3 Vancouver WA)
  • Art in the Pearl (Aug. 30 – Sept. 1, Portland OR)
  • Studio Tours (care to share your studio for a PNWS gathering?)

May your art be going well,

Leslie
