The exhibit at the Hub (formerly Vancouver’s main library, 1007 East Mill Plain Blvd.) features the works of over 50 local sculptors, (many of them PNWS members), students (including works form the Washington State School of the Blind), arranged in kiosks along the perimeters of of this 12,000 sq. ft. space…so large it’s hard to grasp in a photo, allowing participating artists to show a body of work. The exhibit is open until mid June and will include another First Friday event on June 5th.
The opening on May 1st began with talks from three art educators who teach sculpture: (Kim Johnson, Crystal Zeller, and Phil Robertson) followed by three sculptors: (Jennifer Corio, Shelly Durica-Laiche, Andy Kennedy).
The talks were a wonderful opportunity for folks to get a glimpse into some of the process that goes on to bring a sculptural idea to completion and what goes on in the classroom to bring students to think creativly in a 3-d artform.
We expect another large crowd on June 5th and again, we will start with art talks. Jane Hanson (Jim’s wife) and Marty Eichinger will share the stage and shed some light on the history of sculpture in our area and share stories about the early days of PNWS which will include reference to Manuel Izquierdo (one of PNWS founding members). Manuel was commissioned to create a large wood sculpture that remains installed in the opening space of building.
Marilla Guilliams adds final touches on a colaboration with Russell Ford.
We hope you will plan to join us and take in the talks and exhibit. June 5th events will start at 5:30.
The Hub is open Tues-Thursday 10:00-6. Or by appointment. Contact Christine@theartscentered.org
