President’s Message – October 2025

“PNWS is what we make it,” former President Andy Kennedy said at the first board meeting I sat in on.

This refrain, along with his definition of PNWS as a living sculpture of relationships, has resonated with me from the start.

“We have a do-ocracy,” says Treasurer Jessica Stroia. Meaning if you’re willing to step up and take action, you’ll likely be encouraged and supported (as long your proposal aligns with the mission).

As we look toward 2026, it’s time to ask what do you want to DO next year? What are you passionate about?

PNWS is currently taking proposals for the 2026 calendar.

For example, member Alan Root submitted a beautiful request for our April member gathering to happen in The Dalles, Oregon. In addition to time in Alan’s studio and gardens, the event would include a wildflower hike to outdoor kinetic sculptures.

There’s work toward our third Home and Garden Expo, and exploration around another Gathering of the Guilds show. A camp-out with collaborative activities is in the work for the spring, along with a gallery show next fall.

If you’ve been thinking of sharing your studio with members, now’s the time to step forward. Have a favorite sculpture collection you’d like to share and discuss? Ideas for building sculpture awareness and skills in your community? A roundtable discussion you keep envisioning? Let’s talk.

Likewise if you’ve been craving more communication about member shows and events, perhaps you’re ready to take on a supporting role.

Membership administration and website improvements are also areas needing energy in the coming year.

Personally, it’s been easy to crave a retreat into my own world over the past months. And certainly there are times for contemplation. I would ask, however, that if you find yourself stepping back from the world, try stepping forward instead.   Taking action – DOing – especially amongst the lovely, creative hearts and minds of PNWS – may bring far more satisfaction and solace than you’d guess.

May your art flow,
Leslie Crist
P.S. If you are looking for inspiration and a spirit of welcome, join the October or November member gatherings, or one of the Sculpture Conversations. Go to the Calendar of events for full details.
