I am a contemporary surreal folk ceramic sculptor. I often use slabs though I also employ coil and pinch. I carve the surface to create imaginary scenes.

Bea Garth CE Wall Plaques

These CE plaques are all about body language and what is said and not said. I often go into a semi trance and carve imaginary figures and scenes through a dark colored slip. Whatever feelings I have at the time often comes out. I then sometimes go back in and add color with either home-made colored terra sigillatas or commercial CE colorants. Rather than struggle with the clay to make it flat, I like to work with what it wants when I make wall plaques. Thus I purposefully wave the clay slab. I also usually put knobs on the back at the leather hard stage so the plaques can be hung more easily on a wall once they are fired. I am looking forward to making new pieces now that my kiln is about to be hooked up at last.
