For many years, Pacific NW Sculptors has had the honor of being part of one of the biggest art shows in the country – Art in the Pearl.
We made a splash with live raku firing, in partnership with Nathan LaQuaye of Kādence Collective.
Folks who had previously made ceramic masks at PNWS and Kādence-sponsored events came to apply the final glaze and see magical transformations of their work.

Crowds learned from expert artists about the process, as the smell of raku firing filled the air.
Wayne Bunker’s rhino head with custom-made glazes was a sight to behold.

As was Manuel Reyes-Otalora’s rendition of Bailey, an orangutan from the Center for Great Apes.

Thanks to Angelique Waltz’s design work, the booth had new signage and drew in curious attendees. Lively interactions between demo artists and public abounded, and members shared contacts and ideas with each other as well.

I’d like to also thank former member (member on hiatus?) Carrie Allen for her encouragement to improve the booth in order to present PNWS more effectively. Our new layout and signage, along with awesome demo artists and volunteers, helped bring in the highest number of folks yet expressing an interest in connecting after the event.
Addendum: At the September board meeting following the event, there was unanimous support for taking part next year. If this sounds interesting, let Leslie know.
