The land at Betsy Power’s studio in Northeast Portland gently unveiled its treasures as the Pacific Northwest Sculptors met together on Thursday night, 5/27, to share art, food, and friendship.
First came the house in the trees with a enormous head in the corner of the front yard; then a garden and a semi-circle around a fire pit with sculptures of men, women, and hands; then Betsy’s studio filled with maquettes and working notes; and finally, further down the gentle hillside and past more sculptures, the garage that included a 5 foot high kiln.
Betsy shared her own journey into the art world. After years running a gourmet import business in Washington, she sold the business and moved to Oregon. Inspired by the beautiful nature in her yard, she discovered and fell in love with clay. She built her studio and bought her kiln. She also bought a forklift because she knew she wanted to work big.
In case you missed the fun, Betsy’s studio will be open again on June 27 as she realizes her dream of an open space gallery in Portland. She is the main organizer behind the Cully Sculpture Walk that will occur on that day. For more information visit https://www.betsypower.com/cully-sculpture-walk.
