The world is a dark place, my friends. No, I’m not veering into political commentary. It’s literally dark outside. Ever-shortening days and rainy, overcast skies leave me craving more light.
And while the child in me seeks the comfort of candles, of cozy Danish hygge-style light, the adult in me craves BIG, dramatic “Be gone with the darkness!” light.
Craig Dorety’s work fits the bill. With a background in mathematics, physics and engineering, Craig creates moving sculptural forms with LED lights. http://craigdorety.com

“Since the dawn of humankind and the advent of fire (aka technology) we have been fascinated by moving light, color, and shadow. These sculptural objects play on the very evolutionary traits that have led to our success as a species.”
On Saturday, November 23 at 3 p.m., PNW Sculptors is fortunate to have our monthly potluck at Craig’s studio. As with many of our gatherings, I expect the conversation to pinball between technical details, talk of where to find materials and other resources, and topics at the heart of art, such as how humans experience the world and how sculptors capture and share that essence.
If you are considering membership in Pacific NW Sculptors, please join us at Craig’s. It’s a great chance to get a feel for the group and see an amazing work in progress. We hope to also stream the event for those unable to join in person. Stay tuned for streaming details as we get closer to the event.
And speaking of light, it’s not too soon to start planning to take part in the Portland Winter Lights Festival. Jessica Stroia has been working on a clever way for sculptors get involved, while staying warm inside. See the article for details.

In the meanwhile, may the art around and within you provide all the light you need on these gloomy days.
