Thinking seriously of doing my first bronze. Don't know what modeling clay to use. Didn't even know there were so many kinds. Want something that can give good detail. Object will be about a foot high and bulbous. Any recommendations? Characteristics of various clays/waxes? Thanks in advance.

george- work in the clay you want, make a mold and take a wax copy, then work the details in the wax.

George, All the modeling plasticine clays are basically composed of wax: petrolium and bees wax, that determine the hardness, motor oil determines the stickyness and smoothness, and talc to add body ( which can make the clay short ie crumbly or very plastic and maleable) We used to make our own is school.
If you are going to mold the result for an edition stay comfortable using the material you use for the colorful critters. Any of the wax based clays will burn out if you simply want a one shot.
My personal favorite is waterbased clay cause I like the ease of working: no heating or smell. vs ease of storage ; wrapping it up and keeping moist. Patrick
